Chatan Nirai Haarii is back in 2026
The Haarii races take place in th Chatan Fishing Port in front of Chatan Fisharina.
The Okinawa’s traditional haarii races return to Chatan with the 2026 Chatan Nirai Haarii on Sunday, June 21, at Hamagawa Fishing Port in Chatan. The popular local event is now back after skipping last year.
At the heart of the festival is the Haarii boat race, also known as Dragon Boat race, where teams compete paddling traditional Okinawan “sabani” fishing boats. Crews must synchronize every stroke as they race across the harbor, creating an intense and energetic atmosphere along the waterfront.
But the Chatan Nirai Haarii is more than just a race. Visitors can enjoy a full day of Okinawan culture, entertainment, and family-friendly activities. Eisa dance performances, live stage events, and a popular bare-hand fish-grabbing activity for children are all scheduled throughout the day.
Children's bare-hand fish gripping is the favorite of all ages
The hugely popular Queen copy band, Pryzm, plays the finale of the festival.
Food lovers will also find plenty to enjoy, with a bevy of Okinawa’s popular kitchen cars and festival food vendors serving their delicacies at the venue. Expect local favorites, festival snacks, and seaside treats while soaking in the lively atmosphere around the harbor.
One of the highlights this year will be a flyboard performance held near the Fisherina waterfront area in front of the DoubleTree by Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort. The high-flying water show is occasionally seen in the area, but this special performance is expected to draw extra crowds during the festival.
Live music will keep the energy going into the evening. Local surfer band “Shima Bananas” is in the line of live performers, and the hugely popular Queen tribute band Pryzm will conclude the day’s live program.
