Shuri Castle New Year 2026 Celebration – Shinshun no Utage

Ring in 2026 with history and tradition at Shurijo Castle Park, where the annual 新春の宴 (Shinshun no Utage)” New Year Celebration will take place from January 1 to January 3, 2026. This event invites visitors of all ages to immerse themselves in the vibrant cultural legacy of the Ryukyu Kingdom against the stunning backdrop of Shuri Castle Park.

Over three days, guests can enjoy a variety of performances and ceremonial highlights rooted in centuries-old tradition. Witness parts of the Chōhai Goshiki — the royal New Year’s court ritual — and see the King and Queen of the Ryukyu Kingdom make symbolic appearances, just as they did during the castle’s historic heyday. Accompanying these are performances of Uzagaku (traditional Ryukyu court music), Ryukyuan dance, and other classical arts that reflect the kingdom’s elegant cultural heritage.

Beyond performances, the celebration also offers interactive experiences such as New Year kakizome (calligraphy) and traditional Ryukyu games, making it a rich cultural experience for families and culture enthusiasts alike. Special programming includes opportunities to enjoy early morning sunrise views, musical showcases, and a bell-ringing experience that embodies hopes for peace and prosperity in the coming year.

Whether you’re a local or visiting Okinawa for the season, the Shuri Castle New Year Celebration offers a meaningful and festive way to welcome 2026 with history, beauty, and the enduring spirit of Ryukyu.
