Yonabaru Great Tug-of-War Festival 2026
One of Okinawa's exciting summer traditions takes place on August 15–16, 2026 as the 44th Yonabaru Great Tug-of-War Festival takes over the town of Yonabaru. Recognized as one of Okinawa's Three Great Tug-of-War Festivals, this event offers visitors a chance to experience the island's rich traditions, lively atmosphere, and community spirit.
Held at Yonagohama Park and the Udunyama Youth Square, the festival celebrates good health, abundant harvests, and prosperity. The highlight is the awe-inspiring tug-of-war itself, featuring two enormous ropes—each stretching approximately 295 feet (90 meters) in length and weighing over 5 tons. Watching the massive ropes come together before the competition is an impressive sight that captures the energy and excitement of the event.
The celebration begins long before the tug-of-war. Traditional Michi-june street processions fill the town with colorful flag performances, rhythmic drums, gongs, and the lively Mae-Moi dance, creating an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Okinawa. As the giant rope is paraded through the streets, anticipation builds and the entire town comes alive.
Throughout the two-day festival, visitors can also enjoy live stage performances, spectacular fireworks, and food stalls serving delicious local specialties. With entertainment for all ages, it's the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in Okinawan culture while enjoying one of the island's most exciting summer festivals.
If you're visiting Okinawa in August, don't miss the chance to witness this powerful tradition and experience one of the island's most iconic cultural celebrations.
