Condition Rainbow ― The Life and Legend of “Hige no Katchan”

“Condition Rainbow” is a powerful and intimate photo book that captures the extraordinary life of Katsuhiro Kawamitsu, better known as “Hige no Katchan (Beardman Katchan)” ― the legendary frontman of the iconic Okinawan rock band Condition Green.

Known for his explosive performances and magnetic stage presence, Katchan was a central figure in the Okinawan rock scene, particularly during the Vietnam War era, when Koza (Okinawa City) buzzed with American GIs and underground music thrived.

Formed in 1971, the hard rock band “Condition Green” was one of the best-known of Okinawan rock groups in the 1970s. They took the world by storm with Katchan as the leader and vocalist. He was a legend famous for his unpredictable, intense stage performances, such as biting off the head of a live snake, smashing guitars, or collapsing on stage. He was a true artist who always filled live venues with his explosive energy.

This photo book is the culmination of 17 years of photography by Norico, a photographer who first encountered Katchan in 2006 while traveling in Koza. Their meeting sparked a deep bond that would last until Katchan's passing in April 2023. As both his artistic collaborator and life partner, Norico was uniquely positioned to document not only the legendary rocker’s public persona but also his quiet, personal moments, offering readers a rare, multi-dimensional portrait of a man who embodied the rebellious, soulful spirit of Okinawa.

The book includes:
• Striking photographs from Norico chronicling their life together
• Vintage photos of Katchan from his youth and peak Condition Green days
• Handwritten poems left behind by Katchan
• Personal reflections by Norico, sharing memories and untold stories
• A deluxe cover featuring rainbow foil stamping
