25th Shisa Day in Tsuboya
Okinawa celebrates its beloved guardian lion-dog on Shisa Day (April 3) at the 25th annual festival in Tsuboya Yachimun Street. Inspired by the wordplay “4 (shi) 3 (sa),” this lively cultural event showcases the rich tradition of Shisa and Okinawan pottery in the historic birthplace of yachimun ceramics.
Centered around the Tsuboya Pottery Museum and surrounding streets, the festival offers a full day of activities, including free admission to Tsuboya’s Shisa Museum, hands-on experiences, and special exhibitions unique to Tsuboya.
Live pottery demonstrations throughout the day let visitors watch skilled artisans bring Shisa to life. They can also explore the charming pottery-lined streets filled with local culture and craftsmanship.
A must-visit for lovers of Okinawan culture, this event is the perfect way to experience Okinawa’s iconic Shisa tradition up close.
