Itoman Great Tug-of-War is a Historic Showdown by the Sea
The Itoman Great Tug-of-War is one of Okinawa’s most thrilling traditional events, held every summer in the coastal city of Itoman. Known for its rich seafaring and fishing heritage, Itoman comes alive with energy as residents and visitors gather to witness and take part in this centuries-old ritual of strength, unity, and community pride.
The event centers around an enormous rice-straw rope, often weighing several tons, which is divided into east and west teams representing different parts of the city. Participants line up on both sides, gripping the rope tightly, and at the sound of the signal, an intense battle of strength begins. The competition is not just about physical power—it’s a symbolic struggle for good fortune, prosperity, and harmony for the coming year.
Adding to the excitement, the event is accompanied by the festive Michi-Junee (Eisa) parade, drumming performances, and traditional dances that showcase Okinawa’s vibrant culture. Food stalls serving local delicacies line the streets, creating a lively atmosphere for families and visitors to enjoy.
The Itoman Tug-of-War is more than a competition; it is a celebration of tradition that bridges generations and welcomes everyone to join. Spectators can feel the thrill of the crowd, the rhythm of the drums, and the collective heartbeat of a community proud of its heritage.
