Yonabaru Great Tug-of-War 2025: Strength, teamwork, and local pride

Without doubt, the Yonabaru Great Tug-of-War is one of Okinawa’s most thrilling traditional events and one not to be missed!

Originally scheduled for the last Sunday of July, the event has been rescheduled to Sunday, August 3, starting at 17:00.

The main tug-of-war will take place at Udunyama Youth Square in Yonabaru Town. On Saturday, August 2, rope braiding work will be carried out on Chuo Street, with traffic restrictions beginning at 9:00 and continuing until 17:00 on Sunday, August 3. Additional traffic regulations will also be in place around the area starting from August 2.

The Yonabaru Great Tug-of-War welcomes everyone to participate, but please note that sandals and flip-flops are not allowed. Those who gather on Chuo Street around 15:00 p.m. on August 3 can receive a limited-edition event T-shirt.

Adding to the excitement, the Yonagohama Park Festival will be held on both August 2 and 3, featuring food stalls, entertainment, and cultural performances.

This centuries-old tradition, where participants pull a massive 40-ton rice-straw rope believed to bring good fortune and a bountiful harvest, unites the entire community in a spectacular display of strength and local pride.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning fan, don’t miss this unforgettable celebration of tradition and unity in Yonabaru!
