Yonabaru Great Tug-of-War 2025: Strength, teamwork, and local pride
Without doubt, the Yonabaru Great Tug-of-War is one of Okinawa’s most thrilling traditional events and one not to be missed!
Held annually on the last Sunday of July, this event, which has roots going back centuries, brings the entire community together in a dramatic display of strength, teamwork, and local pride. Participants pull a massive 40-ton rope made of rice straw, believed to bring good fortune and a bountiful harvest. The festivities also include live performances, food stalls, and cultural displays throughout the day.
