The headquarters of the Imperial Japanese Army’s Okinawa Defense Force (32nd Army) was located at this place where there stands a concrete wall, the remains of pillboxes that protected the entrance to the cave. Shuri Castle was devastated by airstrikes and shelling by the US military because the Japanese military headquarters were located underneath the castle.
