An evening of Heshikiya Eisa

Boasting a history spanning more than 200 years, Heshikiya Eisa of Uruma City has maintained its original dance style until the present day. Although the old-fashioned costumes are not very showy and the choreography may look rather simple, Heshikiya Eisa presents a distinctive feeling of tradition. This eisa is characterized by the particular way the dancers handle the one-sided hand drum and the fact that they squat down slightly while dancing.

Different from other types of eisa in terms of costume, sound and style, Heshikiya Eisa, designated one of the 100 Soundscapes of Japan by the Ministry of Environment, is a must-see for Okinawan culture enthusiasts.
