Haneji Cosmos Festival Blooms Again

Haneji Cosmos Festival returns to northern Okinawa with a breathtaking display of color and community spirit. Held over two days at the end of January, the festival takes place in the rice paddies of Haneji, Nago City, an area affectionately known as Farabuku.

After the rice harvest, local farmers plant cosmos as green manure to enrich the soil—a sustainable tradition that transforms the fields into a sea of pink and white blossoms. Although this year’s bloom is slightly delayed, up to 10 million cosmos flowers are expected to come into full view from early February. Even after the festival ends, visitors can continue to enjoy the flowers at their peak.

The festival itself is making a welcome comeback after a three-year hiatus, revived by strong local demand and a newly formed organizing committee. Visitors can enjoy hands-on experiences such as cosmos flower picking (20 stems for ¥200) and purchase Haneji-grown rice (3 kg for ¥2,500), a prized local specialty.

On the first day, the stage comes alive with performances by the Inada Brass Band Club, made up of local children, and a dynamic karate demonstration by Kamiyun Tenku Karate Dojo, showcasing regional talent and tradition.
