Nakijin Castle Cherry Blossom Festival radiates winter magic
One of Okinawa’s most magical winter traditions is a visit to the Nakijin Castle Cherry Blossom Festival. Set within the stone walls of a UNESCO World Heritage site, vivid pink kanhizakura blossoms bloom earlier here than almost anywhere else in Japan, creating a breathtaking contrast against the ancient gusuku ruins.
By day, stroll through history surrounded by thousands of cherry trees. By night, the castle transforms during special light-up hours, when softly illuminated blossoms and stone pathways create a dreamy, almost otherworldly atmosphere. The festival blends natural beauty, Ryukyu heritage, and seasonal romance—perfect for photographers, couples, and anyone seeking a uniquely Okinawan sakura experience.
Held from the end of January to February 8 at in the middle of the Nakijin Castle Ruins, this iconic event is a must-see highlight of winter travel in northern Okinawa. Arrive early, linger after sunset, and enjoy cherry blossom viewing unlike anywhere else in Japan.
