Itoman Haarii 2026 – Okinawa’s Most Authentic Maritime Tradition

Itoman is a community long built around seafaring and fishing.

Every year on the fourth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar – June 18 this year – the fishing town of Itoman proudly presents one of Okinawa’s oldest and most sacred maritime traditions: the Itoman Haarii. While dragon boat races throughout Okinawa are commonly known as “Haarii,” in Itoman the traditional pronunciation “Haaree” (Hārē) has been carefully maintained for generations, reflecting the event’s deep cultural roots.

Known as the town of the Uminchu (Okinawan fishermen), Itoman has long depended on the sea for its livelihood. The Itoman Haarii is both a prayer for safe voyages and abundant catches and a celebration of the community’s enduring connection to the ocean.

The festival’s most thrilling spectacle is the Kunnukasee (Capsized Boat Race). During this dramatic competition, crews intentionally overturn their boat in the water, then quickly right it, climb back aboard, and continue racing. Originally based on the real-life survival skills needed by Okinawan fishermen facing rough seas, this unique event showcases teamwork, strength, and maritime expertise.

The trademark race of Itoman Haarii is Kunnukasee where competing crews have to capsize and then right again their boats at the halfway point of the race.

The festival culminates with the prestigious Agari Baarii, a fierce race between representatives of Itoman’s historic districts—Nishimura, Nakamura, and Arashima. The race is a matter of local pride, drawing enthusiastic support from residents and visitors alike.

Throughout the day, the harbor resonates with traditional Haarii songs unique to Itoman. The lyrics express respect and gratitude toward the Uminchu who have sustained the community through generations. Understanding the meaning behind these songs adds a deeper appreciation for the spiritual atmosphere that fills the port during the festival.

The entire local community takes part in the races with enthusiasm.

More than just a sporting event, the Itoman Haarii offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience Okinawa’s living maritime heritage. From dramatic races to centuries-old customs, this beloved festival remains one of the island’s most authentic cultural experiences.
