One of Okinawa’s largest and most exciting traditional tug-of-war events takes place in the seaside city of Itoman on September 25, 2026.

Unlike many festivals that have moved their celebrations to weekends or public holidays, the Itoman Great Tug-of-War is traditionally held on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. Known locally as Hachigwachi Jugoya, this centuries-old ritual is performed to pray for a plentiful harvest, a successful fishing season, good health, and prosperity.

The day of the Itoman Tug-of-War starts with putting the giant rope together from separate parts made in the ten districts of Itoman.

Preparations begin in the morning, when smaller ropes handmade by Itoman’s ten districts are twisted together to form two enormous rice-straw ropes: the male rope, Uujina, and the female rope, Miijina. When joined, the great rope reaches approximately 180 meters in length, making it one of the largest in Okinawa.

Michi Junee parade starts at 14:00.

Before the showdown, more than 1,000 residents fill the streets for the colorful Michi-Junee parade. Towering banners lead a lively procession of traditional dancers, musicians, and children’s eisa groups from Itoman Elementary School toward Hakugindo.

As evening approaches, the South team, Heekata, and North team, Nishikata, gather on opposite ends of the rope. Performers portraying the legendary figures Ichiman Magii and Makabi Chaan face off above the crowd before the signal is given. Then, to thunderous chants of “Haaiya!” participants pull with all their strength in a dramatic contest.

Visitors are welcome to join the pull, making this a rare opportunity to experience Okinawan tradition from inside the action.

The date is based on the traditional lunar-calendar schedule. Program times and transportation arrangements for 2026 have not yet been officially announced and are subject to change. Traffic restrictions are expected around the venue. Visitors are encouraged to use public transportation.
