Early Summer Colors Return to the Hills of Motobu: Yohena Hydrangea Garden opens
Hidden in the lush hills of northern Okinawa, Yohena Hydrangea Garden transforms into one of the island’s most beautiful seasonal flower spots each spring. The beloved garden returns for the 2026 season with thousands of hydrangeas covering the hillside in vibrant shades of blue, purple, pink, and white.
Originally started by the late Uto Yohena, known across Okinawa as the “Lady of Hydrangeas,” the garden began from just two hydrangea plants decades ago. Today, visitors can stroll through approximately 10,000 hydrangea bushes featuring around 40 varieties and nearly 300,000 blossoms spread across the peaceful mountainside.
The garden’s gentle walking paths, scenic overlooks, and colorful flower tunnels make it one of Okinawa’s most photogenic rainy season destinations. In addition to hydrangeas, tropical flowers and greenery throughout the property add to the relaxing atmosphere.
The best viewing period is typically from late May through mid-June, before Okinawa’s summer heat and typhoon season arrive. Weekday mornings are especially recommended for quieter visits and easier parking.

A Life in Full Bloom:
In the quiet hills of Motobu, the legacy of the late Uto Yohena continues to bloom every spring as thousands visit the famous Yohena Hydrangea Garden she lovingly created.
Yohena began planting hydrangeas decades ago on what was once a citrus orchad. What started with only a few plants eventually grew into one of Okinawa’s best-known seasonal flower gardens, attracting visitors from across Japan and overseas.
Today, the garden continues her legacy with approximately 10,000 hydrangea bushes and nearly 300,000 blooms covering the hillside every year during the early summer season.
For the 2026 season, the garden will open from May 9 through June 21, welcoming visitors once again to experience the peaceful scenery and the enduring spirit behind one of Okinawa’s most beloved flower destinations.
