Shurijo Castle Festival brings Ryukyu Kingdom Heritage alive

Every fall, Naha City comes alive with the brilliant colors, sounds, and pageantry of the Shurijo Castle Festival — Okinawa’s premier cultural celebration honoring the legacy of the Ryukyu Kingdom. For three days, visitors are invited to step back in time and experience the elegance, artistry, and royal traditions that shaped the island’s history.

The Shurijo Castle Festival is more than just a celebration, it is a living link to Okinawa’s royal past. From regal processions to vibrant performing arts, the festival offers unforgettable experiences that highlight the cultural pride of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a culture lover, or simply seeking a once-a-year spectacle, this event promises to be one of the most memorable highlights of your visit to Okinawa.

Ryukyu Performing Arts – Modern Kumiodori

On Saturday, November 1, four dynamic performances introduce audiences to a modern interpretation of Kumiodori, Okinawa’s traditional dance-drama. Blending classical artistry with contemporary music, choreography, and dialogue, this bold “New Kumiodori” showcases how tradition continues to evolve for new generations.
Performance times: 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00 (approx. 30 min. each).

Ryukyu Royal Procession

On Sunday, November 2 from 12:30–14:30, Kokusai Street transforms into a living history stage. More than 450 performers, led by the King and Queen, recreate the splendor of the Ryukyu court in the Ryukyu Royal Procession. This grand parade revives the royal dignity, traditional costumes, and cultural pride of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Traffic restrictions will be in place from 12:00–15:00 along Kokusai Street.

Traditional Procession in Shurijo Castle Town

On Monday, November 3 from 12:50–15:30, the festival presents the Koshiki Gyoretsu—the Traditional Procession. This event reenacts the King’s “Three Temple Pilgrimage,” a solemn journey to pray for national peace and a bountiful harvest. Beginning at Hōshinmon Gate in Shurijo Castle Park, the procession winds its way through Shureimon Gate to Ryūtan-dōri Street, offering a rare chance to witness a centuries-old ritual brought to life.
Traffic restrictions apply from Yamakawa Intersection to Torihori Intersection between 12:30–20:00 (partial until 18:00).
